Workshops and Events for New Students

August is an exciting time for new students. You may be beginning a new journey, moving off on your own for the first time, or attending your first higher education institution! It can be overwhelming; however, fear not, the Student Success Center is hosting a range of activities to PREPARE you for success.

The Student Success Center is hosting new student PREPARE events: several group sessions, social activities, and tours for students throughout August.

Some of these events include:

  • Q&A with academic advising and services staff (weekly on Wednesdays)
  • Info sessions on renting and signing a lease (August 11, and 23)
  • Info sessions on searching for housing in Montreal (August 16, 18, 24, and 29)
  • New student tours of the campuses and different faculties (SGW: August 10 & 24; Faculty of Arts and Sciences: August 12 & 24)
  • What to expect about living in Montreal (August 16)
  • Meet a friend online (August 19) or on campus (August 30 & 31)
  • DISCOVER virtual orientation (August 25)
  • Scavenger Game (August 31)
  • CONNECT orientation events (August 30 & 31)

FROSH for Arts and Science Students

The Arts and Science Federation of Associations (ASFA) is already selling tickets for Frosh!

Frosh takes place from August 31-September 3rd 2022 and involves many events where you can have fun and meet students. You’ll be put in a team with other Froshees and your Frosh leader to compete in multiple events and various challenges throughout the week.

Events include:

  • Student Fair, BBQ, and DJ in the Loyola Quad
  • A night of dancing at Cafe Campus
  • Escape room
  • Pub crawl/tour
  • Brunch

Don’t delay! Tickets are selling fast and all the early bird tickets are already sold out!

There will be alcohol at many events, but there are alcohol-free events and tickets for those under 18 years of age (legal drinking age in Quebec).

They only have tickets for the entire 4 days, but single-day passes will be available soon.

Student Sustainability Ambassadors Program

Are you passionate about sustainability and the environment? Want to make the world a more sustainable place? Upset about waste and wasteful practices or environmental destruction?

Take part in Concordia’s Sustainability Ambassadors Program!

The Sustainability Ambassadors Program provides select students with an immersive sustainability leadership experience. It will provide creative engagement opportunities that build skills and competencies and support a culture of sustainability on campus.

The program will provide theoretical as well as practical knowledge and skills in how to approach environmental issues under a framework of sustainability. It will work towards making these students leaders of sustainability.

You can also apply for the program to be listed on your co-curricular record! Note, that there is a time commitment for the program (roughly five hours per week).

They are currently accepting applications from students who are entering their first year at Concordia.

Job Opportunity with People’s Potato

The People’s Potato is a student group which serves free vegan and vegetarian meals to students several times per week at the 7th floor of the Hall building.

They are looking for a new collective member. Duties will include:

  • Cooking & cleaning
  • Picking up food donations
  • Portfolio work
  • Organizing workshops
  • Coordinating volunteers
  • Kitchen administration and finance

Time commitment: 25 hours/week (2-3 shifts)
Salary: 22.00$/hr.

Job Opportunity with the SpokenWeb AmpLab

SpokenWeb–a SSHRC funded Partnership Grant, Principal Investigator Jason Camlot–is seeking one (1) student to support work completing construction of and coordinating activities in the The Amplitude Lab (AmpLab) for Literary Sound Studies.

They are looking for someone who has strong research and organizational skills and who enjoys working in a team with other students. Previous experience working in a lab context, or managing and describing technical equipment, designing equipment tracking processes, and an interest in audio equipment and digitization processes will be an asset. The work will be well suited for a student who enjoys working independently, but also works well with teams in person and virtually. 

The position runs from August to December 30th, 2022.

Duties will include:

  • Supporting the SpokenWeb Principal Investigator and Project Manager in completing the assembly of the lab
  • Completing equipment inventory of items in the lab
  • Developing instructional documentation on the use of the AmpLab digitization system
  • Being present in the lab to support students
  • Developing content for the AmpLab webpage

Time commitment: 10 hours/week
Salary: Rate to be determined by the Collective Agreement

Library Research Workshops

Concordia’s library offers several sessions on citing and researching in the library. If you’re new to research and writing academic essays, then these workshops could be of value to you. It can even benefit students who just want to use the library more effectively.

In the research workshop, you might learn about the Library’s Sofia system, how to use search terms effectively, locating sources, and good research practices.

In the citation workshops, you’ll learn about the basics of citing in a specific citation style (APA or Chicago). This workshop is useful because philosophy students need to cite sources from as early as their first philosophy course!

Register for a workshop while there’s still space and take advantage of essential skills you will use throughout your degree and academic career!
