Concordia Philosophy Student Weekly Tabloid Vol. 15

We hope everyone has had some time for a break over the long weekend. I know I had a mental hangover from pushing myself so hard this past month and really needed the break.

The semester is soon nearly halfway finished. Midterms will be coming soon, if they haven’t already, and work will pile up. Push through and take a much-needed rest if you need one.

Here’s the 15th Volume of the Concordia Philosophy Student Weekly Tabloid! Bringing you all the hottest and best events and relevant philosophy news.

This week, we disseminate news about:

  • Our Annual General Assembly and first social event
  • A philosopher speaker series talk
  • An Epic Used Book Giveaway!
  • Various events: Therapy dogs, applying to law school, and learn to read academic texts.
  • A teaser of SoPhiA’s new communal space

Annual General Assembly and First Social Event

SoPhiA AGM logo

Our Annual General Assembly and first social event are tonight!

We will have our Annual General Assembly (AGM), tonight Oct 13th from 5-7pm, which will include food 🌯. Then we will head over to the social event together at 7:00pm (N sur Mackay) for free drinks!

Join us for this experience of an evening with student discussion, comradery, food, drinks, and socializing!

What is an AGM? An AGM is the meeting of all students in philosophy.

During the General Assembly we convene to do business:

  • We vote in new executive members (you can nominate yourself directly at the AGM)
  • Introduce your current executive members
  • Discuss this year’s budget & events
  • Students can propose a motion(s) which mandates SoPhiA to act on
  • The floor will also be open to discussion or questions (tell us what your gripes are with the philosophy program!)

The open positions you can run for are listed on our website, along with the position descriptions. Running is as simple as saying “I want to run” during the assembly.

It’s important to support SoPhiA by attending the AGM, because we need a minimum amount in attendance to be formally in session (this is called “quorum”). And in doing so, you help us help you better!

Philosophy Department Speaker Talk: “Between the Particular and the Universal: Lessons from Suhrawardi”

The philosophy department and 4th space are hosting the first philosophy speaker of the year.

Reza Hadisi, Assistant Professor in Philosophy and Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, will discuss the views of a pivotal figure in the history of medieval Arabic and Persian philosophy, Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi (1154–1191) who argued that imagination is a primary source of knowledge.

There has historically been low attendance by philosophy students at these talks, so more reason to show up!
