We are the Students of Philosophy Association at Concordia (L’associations des Étudiantes et Étudiants de Philosophie de l’Université Concordia).
We as your SoPhiA executive represent your interests as undergraduate students in Philosophy at Concordia.
Our association understands the importance of community for creating the best university experience and fostering an environment conducive to philosophy. We are here to answer any questions you may have, provide tutoring options, lectures, study groups and of course, social events. We also have a lending library available to students in our office space, which holds a variety of relevant philosophy material including required texts for classes. Furthermore, we are the primary communication line between the students and the faculty and are here to address any concerns you may have with or about professors, staff, grading or the way your classes are run.
Feel free to take the time to explore this site and see what it is we have to offer you as a philosophy student at Concordia. If you have any further questions please go to the contacts section of the website to find out how to reach us.

Association Membership
SoPhiA consists of the elected executive members and regular members. Executive members are officially elected at our Annual General Assembly (AGM), or during the ASFA elections. All students enrolled in a philosophy program are automatically regular members.
What is the privilege of being a regular member of SoPhiA? The executives are liable to our members. Regular members also get voting rights at our AGM, and have speaking rights during our monthly executive meetings. We are here to make sure your voice is heard and your will is manifest.
What’s the privilege of being an executive member of SoPhiA? You get to be a student leader to create a great philosophy community. You also get the opportunity to access opportunities and work on cool projects. The leadership experience and opportunities by being an executive are sure to develop you positively.
Association Hierarchy
We are a member association (MA) of the Arts and Science Federation of Associations (ASFA), who acts as our umbrella association. As we are not a registered nonprofit, they are liable to SoPhiA. In case of any conflict in the by-laws, their by-laws become the authority. They provide our budget, and we are bound to attend and participate in ASFA council meetings.
The hierarchy is the following:
We are the white triangle as a member association. We consist of all students enrolled in a philosophy program at Concordia University (regular members) and the elected executives (executive members). The Annual General Assembly is the liaison between the executive and regular members, where members can propose motions, vote, and discuss anything the with executive.
Our main link to ASFA is our elected ASFA Representative who sits on the ASFA Regular Council Meetings as an MA Councillor. The Councillor has the power to vote on ASFA affairs and propose motions. All important ASFA decisions go through council. As such, we participate in ASFA just as much as ASFA participates in us.
Those lower on the triangle represent those higher on the triangle. The ASFA executive represents, to some extent, all students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences through its member associations.
