During the 2022 general elections, the referendum questions put to vote passed and the changes were added to the by-laws. The by-laws on our documentation page is the updated version with the changes in place. See the election results.
Here’s a summary of the changes:
- We can now vote to change our by-laws directly at a general assembly, given a quorum party is present and the vote is a majority “yes”. (Section III.5.g)
- We’ve added the official position of “Sophia Review Editor-in-Chief” to the by-laws (Section IV.7)
- We’ve replaced the “Volunteer Coordinator” position with the “Sophia Review Editor-in-Chief” position. (Section IV.8.h)
- We’ve slightly altered the wording in Section IV.10 to make the by-law less ambiguous.
Further, we also elected our new 2022-2023 executive party:
- Sustainability and Inclusivity Advisor: Soline Van de Moortelle
- Social and Events Coordinator: Uriah Marc Todoroff
- Outreach and Communications Coordinator: Andrew Wilcox
During the 2022 MA General Elections, we have several referendum questions we will pose our student body during the voting period (March 22-24, 2022).
These are the same questions asked in the 2021 by-elections. In the by-elections, we unfortunately only had 14 votes and did not meet the quorum of 15 votes to make any vote valid.

A General Assembly was held on March 20th, 2019. After discussion, members of SoPhiA voted on various proposed amendments and additions to the SoPhiA by-laws. Though some of these amendments were passed with quorum, certain amendments were passed without quorum. This means the following amendments will have to be ratified at SoPhiA’s next GA.

First SoPhiA GA for 2018-2019 Academic Year on September 27th, 2018:

The question: “Do you agree with the proposed amendments to the SoPhiA bylaws?“, passed during the SoPhiA general elections of March, 2018. The vote was 24 in favour, four against, and one abstention.
A Special General Assembly was held on March 1st, 2018. After rigorous discussion, members of SoPhiA voted unanimously on various proposed amendments and additions to the SoPhiA by-laws, as well as vote to adopt a rolling mandate.
These proposed amendments to the by-laws will go through a referendum question at ballot during our upcoming general elections. Please find all the relevant documents here:

Members of SoPhiA sometimes adopt rolling mandates at the general assemblies that represent the values and opinions of the philosophy student body at Concordia. Below are listed the various mandates that have been adopted.
On September 12th and and October 24th, 2014, SoPhiA voted in general assembly to join with and adopt the principles of the Coalition ÉCO – Étudiants et étudiantes contre les oléoducs.
Also on October 24th, 2014, SoPhiA voted in three rolling mandates:
1. That we would pursue accreditation for SoPhiA.
2. That we would stand against austerity measures being leveled against Concordia and the philosophy department.
3. That we stand against the lack of job security for LTAs.

On October 5th, 2015, SoPhiA adopted three new rolling mandates (please refer to the links below for more information on what each mandate refers to):
1. That the members of SoPhiA demand that information on inclusivity be included on all syllabi in philosophy courses.
2. That Concordia refuse to support the Foreign Academic Recruitment Requirements that makes jobs at Canadian universities precarious and insecure for anyone applying from outside Canada.
3. That we oppose the student tribunals and the university’s decision to charge students who take part in strike movements and other political activities at the school.
On April 2nd, 2016, SoPhiA voted in referendum in favour of the following question:
Do you, as a member of SoPhiA agree: that should an opportunity arise SoPhiA will separate from ASFA and put to question a fee levy?
